I will be doing an art workshop for kids this Saturday, Feb 7th from 5pm-7pm, together with my artist friends Natural Sedova and Julia Rivera. The workshop is organized by Inspired Community (logo design by Nando Nkrumah) and is just one of a whole range of events to celebrate Black History month here in Berlin.
Germany has a community of about 700 000 black people living and working here. Many are children of American GIs who were stationed here but left their girlfiends/wives and children behind when going back to the States. Other people came from Nigeria, Ghana, Tanzania or other countries to study here. In the end they stayed and their children grow up in German society. Some are GIs that did stay and started families, or they originally came from Cuba and lived and worked in the eastern part of Germany until it got reunited. We all have different backgrounds which makes it difficult to form a community. This is one of the things that makes black people in Germany stand out in Europe. All the other countries have much more unified communities as they often share the same cultural backgrounds which stems from the fact that most of them come from their countries former “colonies”. So in the Netherlands you will find many people from Suriname and from the Antilles Islands , in England it’s people from Jamaica, in Belgium they are fom Congo…
The “Initiative scharze Menschen in Deutschland” ) celebrates black German culture by organizing Black History Month in Berlin for the very first time and I’m proud to be part of it!
So if you are in Berlin , come by and visit us.
